About the role

Outlier connects finance professionals to paid, remote project work training advanced AI for the world’s leading labs. You design realistic client scenarios and critique AI-generated financial planning work for accuracy and sound reasoning — holding it to the standard you’d apply to your own client deliverables. Your expertise is the product.

This is not a paraplanning role. It’s flexible 1099 project work that runs alongside whatever else you’re doing.

What you’ll do

  • Design and solve complex, real-world client scenarios to train AI in expert personal financial planning
  • Critique AI-generated deliverables for accuracy and sound reasoning
  • Review and rank the model’s chain of thought for correctness and approach
  • Write clear explanations of your reasoning — you’re teaching the model why, not just scoring it

Ideal background

Hands-on professional experience serving individual clients in one or more of:

  • Personal tax — 1040 preparation, personal tax planning, capital gains, self-employment and quarterly taxes
  • Investments & retirement — portfolios, asset allocation, rebalancing, 401(k)/IRA/Roth, Social Security
  • Financial planning — comprehensive personal planning, budgeting, cash flow, debt, goals
  • Estate planning (non-attorney) — estate and gift tax, trust administration, beneficiary planning, fiduciary accounting
  • Debt & life events — student loans, mortgage refinance, credit card payoff, home affordability, 529 and college planning
  • Equity comp & self-employed finances — RSUs, stock options, ESPP, freelancer and self-employed cash flow

You should be comfortable writing clearly in English — a good portion of the work is written explanation, not just rating.

Terms

  • Up to $90 USD/hr, plus additional incentives. Contributors earn an average of 7.5% more through Missions (Outlier’s surge pricing); the top quartile averages 11%.
  • 1099 contractor, fully remote, United States
  • Choose your own schedule. Most contributors work 5–10 hrs/week, up to 40. No minimum commitment.
  • Free access to GPT, Claude and other leading models — over $200/month in value, included
