Overview

About the firm.

MARGIN is a fee-only RIA in Denver. One lead advisor, an operations lead, a senior paraplanner, roughly $90M under management, and an intentionally small practice of senior corporate executive families: 409A, 457(b), 457(f) deferred comp, RSUs and ISOs, concentrated stock, corporate insiders, multi-entity returns with most new clients comprised of expanding layers of complexity.

We run two planning surges a year, spring and year-end. You can see it here:

Year-end: we do custom videos and a customized checklist for executives with no time to meet (think Spotify wrapped, with a trailer to the next series of episodes)

We are growing as AI-first, not as a buzzword: building a library of documented SOPs, and a prompt library in our system, Loom-based reviews both for scoping, internal delivery, and client delivery; Wealthbox workflows, and Claude running inside the planning process. This current role is a back-end role. You will never talk to a client.

Our lead advisor and ops lead own all client contact, so you get deep work without the phone.

How I think about this work.

I grade planning work on a 1-to-6 analysis scale.

  • Level 1: All the data in, accurate.
  • Level 2: Issue spotting what’s missing and what needs to be done next.
  • Level 3: Initial analysis on the straightforward cases: you would run all work here with a final lead review.
  • Level 4: Real analysis on the complex ones with learning and lead review.
  • Levels 5: Competing-factor edge cases with spiraling interdependent trade-offs where creativity can override a template. Those stay with me and our senior paraplanner.

This seat starts at a solid 2-3 with a paid runway to Level 4.

Kitchen version:  You are on the line in helping run the kitchen, and when something is wrong mid-recipe, you stop and flag it instead of serving it anyway. I plate the food and someone brings it to the client.

You won’t be dropped in alone. Your first months of work get Loom-reviewed by me and our senior paraplanner, and you inherit the infrastructure: a Loom library of how I think through cases, the firm prompt library, and a template for every deliverable.

The standard of detail and review is high and the support matches it.

What you’ll do:

  • Plan builds and updates in RightCapital and Income Lab; tax projections and scenarios in Holistiplan pressure tested with AI
  • First-pass analysis on real cases: Roth conversions where ACA credits and the 0% capital gains bracket interact; next-dollar decisions across 403(b), 457(b), and deferred comp with forfeiture risk, etc.
  • Depreciation recapture gain treatment on homes, rentals, vacations, collectibles, quarterly estimated payments with many inputs that are non-recurring; NQDC distribution timing
  • Meeting prep through the spring and year-end surge cycles, and prepping our custom scorecards, think like when you get your car worked on
  • Work inside our AI stack: firm prompts, templates, a strict redaction policy, and pressure-testing your own analysis with Claude before I see it
  • Loom walkthroughs of your work, self-graded against our rubric before anything ships

A plus: If you get excited about refining our Wealthbox workflows and templates, and how Loom and Claude should flow in those steps.

Optional scope as we build coverage redundancy: non-discretionary trade execution under written instruction and money-movement support with our ops lead, with any required registration handled by us; mostly selling money markets, and raising cash, or rebalancing new qualified money into a model in iRebal only in emergencies: travel, sick, accident/disability.

You’re a great fit if:

  • Biggest asset: You don’t need a CPA or EA. But, huge plus if you have one. You need to know how a return fits together and be dangerous enough to go find what is needed, and missing. A lead candidate: you have 3+ tax seasons of real exposure prepping at a regional accounting firm.
  • Proactive and self-starter: you interview back. You ask scoping questions before starting work, not after you’re stuck
  • Straight talker: You’re honest about capacity. Tell me what you can actually give. A clean no on the first call earns more respect here than an overcommit that breaks in week six
  • Handle coaching and reviewing others work constructively: Direct feedback reads as fuel. I mark up work hard, mine hardest of all. If you need it softened, you’ll hate this. If you want to get sharp fast, there’s no better seat to learn and work on complex cases
  • You’re AI-fluent or genuinely hungry to become it

Details.

  • 1099 contractor, fully remote, async-first: I care about turnaround standards, not what hour of the day you work. 12-15 hours per week to start on a guaranteed weekly retainer.
  • Paid 30-day evaluation to start, then scaling toward 25-30+ hours per week over the next 6-12 months as the practice expands and paraplanning consolidates into this seat, potential W2 conversion on the table in 2027 for the right person.
  • If your realistic ceiling is under 20 hours per week, this isn’t your seat, and I’d rather you know that now than in week six.
  • NDA, client non-solicit, and our AI use policy are conditions of engagement. E&O a plus, but not  necessary.
  • Growth path is real: this seat can grow toward the senior planning and tax role as we scale.
